When someone is subject to an investigation by the federal government, they will often receive what's called a "target letter."
A target letter is the means by which the federal government informs individuals that they are targets for criminal prosecution. In the simplest terms, it means the federal prosecutor believes the recipient has committed a crime.
The letter may come after federal agents have tried to interview you, or it may come seemingly out of the blue.
If law enforcement reaches out to you, remember that you may have already been under Investigation for some time. It's Important to contact an attorney right away to protect yourself and your rights.
If federal authorities arrive with a warrant to search your home, you should cooperate and request to speak with your lawyer. During the search, take note of how they are conducting your investigation and inform your attorney. Law enforcement officials must follow strict procedures, otherwise any evidence obtained may be dismissed by a judge.
If federal agents arrive at your home without a warrant, you are not obligated to consent to the search or invite them to your home. Respectfully decline and notify your attorney of what is happening.
